Your English level and progress

At Excel English we want you to learn English as quickly as possible. It is therefore very important we place you at the correct starting level and follow your progress carefully. We have 7 levels at Excel English - Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate, Pre Advanced, Advanced 1 and Advanced 2.

See the PDF below to find out what level you are now and to decide what level you'd like to be when you leave Excel English.

 Levels at Excel English

The following questions will help you understand how we assess your level and progress.

  • How will you decide my level when I arrive?
Your speaking, listening, writing and reading levels are carefully tested on your first day so we can measure your ability to use English. You will be placed in a class which will be the best one for you to improve all your language skills but especially listening and speaking.

  • What if I want to take an exam?
If you want to take an examination course, we will advise you which exam is best for your level.

  • How will you monitor my progress?
Your progress is important to us. You will:
  • be regularly assessed in your classes to make sure you are making good progress
  • be given marks and individual corrections so that you can see how well you are doing
  • be given suggestions on extra work on aspects of the language you need to improve
  • have regular, individual tutorial sessions with your teacher for advice and feedback.
  • When will I move up to the next level?
When your teachers think you are ready to move up to the next level, they will discuss this with you. Whether you move levels will depend on our individual assessment of your confidence and abilities. If you feel you are not in the right level group or not making the progress you had hoped for, you can discuss this with your teachers or the Vice Principal at any time.

  • How much progress will I make?
This will depend on how long you are at the school and your starting level. Progress is faster at the lower levels (Elementary to Pre Intermediate), but it may take longer to reach Upper Intermediate from Intermediate. This is normal in language learning. Remember, how much you participate in the class and what you do OUTSIDE the class is also important if you want to make fast progress. (See Your lessons with us & Help yourself learn)

  • Can I take extra lessons?
Yes! If you decide you want to take more lessons than you originally booked, then talk to the Registrar or Vice Principal. They will advise you on exam courses and our skills lessons. You can also take individual lessons. See Our Courses for details and prices.

  • Will I have a certificate with my level on it when I leave the school?
Your Leaving Certificate will have your leaving level on it and if you are at the school for more than 8 weeks we will give you a detailed written breakdown of your progress in all the language skills.

Students speak

"I experienced different schools the first time I was in London and I always felt like an anonymous student, making all the effort to meet people in order to practise my English... Here is to be in a WELL-KNOWN group, not only for the friendly atmosphere but also for the way we are taught. Lessons involving all the people, games in the group, and also the great patience our teachers show to accept all our questions, make you face your 'lack of confidence'. You learn not just a new language but also how to relate with foreign people - that's more important!!"
