New Security Rules on UK Flights

You may be aware that the security rules on flights departing from the UK have now changed.  The main difference is that security officers will now inspect your electronic devices more closely.

How will this affect you?

If you have any electronic devices in your hand luggage, security officers will ask you to switch on the device to prove that it is genuine.  If you cannot switch on the device (for example because the battery has no power remaining), they will not allow you to take your device onto the flight.

UK airport officials claim that the new security measures will not affect the length of time you will spend passing through the security checks.

How can you ensure that you will be able to take your device onto your flight?

Make sure that your device has enough power left in the battery, in case security officers ask you to switch it on – charge up your electronic devices before leaving for the airport.

Which electronic devices will be inspected?

These new inspections apply to any electronic device you are carrying in your hand luggage, including laptops, tablet computers, mp3 players, cameras, electronic book readers and mobile phones.

Do you have more questions?

If you do not understand this information, or you have other questions about security procedures at UK airports, please come and speak to our staff in Reception, who will be happy to give you the information you need before you leave the UK.

Travelling by Bus in London

This is a quick reminder that from this Sunday (6 July 2014), London’s buses will no longer accept cash payment for travel.

How does this affect you?

This change means that you must have enough credit on your Oyster card for your journey.  The current Oyster fare for a single bus journey is £1.45.  If you do not have credit on your Oyster card, the bus driver will not accept a cash payment instead.

Where can you Top Up your Oyster card?

You can Top Up your Oyster card at any London Underground station, as well as at one of the many shops which display the “Oyster” sign.  You can also register your Oyster Card on the Transport for London website, which will allow you to Top Up your card online using a credit or debit card.

Still Confused?

If you have any questions, please come and speak to a member of staff at reception, and we will be happy to explain this to you.

Our location

We teach our students in a modern college building in Barnet, north London, and the majority of our students stay in the local student residence – next to the college building.  There are some homestay places available for students aged 15 & 16 years who want to experience life in a British home – all located within 15 minutes of the college facilities.

At the Explore London Experience, our goal is to boost the communication skills of our students, many of whom learn English at school but do not have the confidence to use it.  Our lessons encourage all students to participate, with fun activities designed specially for young learners.

Exploring London

Our programme of afternoon activities ensures that students visit all of London’s famous sights, while supervised by our friendly staff.  At the weekends, our day trips will take students to other famous British cities and sights, including the Harry Potter Studio Tour, Oxford and Cambridge, as well as some London sights that deserve a full day trip, such as Greenwich and the Tower of London.

Airport Meeting Service

We also offer an airport meeting and transfer service, to ensure that your child is safe and supervised from the moment they arrive in London until they take their flight home.

Any questions?  Check out our FAQs below or visit our Explore London Experience pages.

IELTS Results – congratulations!

On Friday (7 March 2014) we learned that our latest IELTS candidates had received their results and we are delighted with their outcomes.

These students are all studying with us in order to improve their level of English so that they can study at UK universities in September.  They decided to take the IELTS Preparation Course and exam in February to find out how much more their English needs to improve to get their target IELTS results before they leave Excel English in May.

As a result, we and they were expecting their results to show progress towards their targets (these targets were between 6.5 and 7.0, depending upon the university course they want to take).  So we were truly amazed to find that 3 of the 5 students have already achieved their target level and the other 2 are very close to reaching it.

Of course, the main credit for these results must go to the students whose hard work resulted in such amazing test scores.  However we would also like to congratulate our dedicated and supportive teachers, who have helped these students to improve their level of English in general English classes over the past few months, as well as teaching them the techniques they needed to get the best result on exam day.  We are proud to have such excellent students and staff here in our school!

IELTS Preparation Course Coming Soon

A reminder that our next IELTS Preparation course will begin on Monday 31 March 2014, and there are still a few spaces remaining.

Who needs IELTS?

When you are learning English, one question you might ask yourself is –

“Should I take an official exam at the end of my course?”

At Excel English, we think the correct answer depends on your reasons for studying.

If you are simply taking a short English course to refresh your knowledge of English and spend some time in London (one of the world’s greatest cities!), then taking home a school certificate, lifelong friendships and happy memories at the end of your stay will be good enough for you.

On the other hand, if you are learning English for your personal enjoyment, then taking an exam might be a good opportunity to challenge yourself.

But if you are studying English for your career or future study plans, then a good result in an internationally recognised examination will be very important for you.

Fail to prepare = prepare to fail

Many people do not realise that your knowledge of English alone is not enough to help you pass the exam.  To get the result that truly reflects your skills, you need to prepare for the different challenges you will face in the exam itself.  Here at Excel English we have courses to help you to prepare for a Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE), Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam.

Our next exam preparation course is for IELTS, which begins on 31 March.  The programme will last for 4 weeks and includes 21.5 hours per week of exam preparation lessons.  These lessons will help you to prepare for the exam, which includes tests of your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.  We can also arrange for you to take the exam at a local testing centre (additional fee applies).

Measuring success

IELTS exam candidates receive a score between 1 (beginner) and 9 (expert).  For students who wish to study at a UK university, it is usually necessary to obtain a result of 6.5 or higher (depending upon the course chosen).

In 2013, 84% of Excel English students who took the IELTS exam achieved a result that was equal to or higher than their target.

Table of IELTS scores required by UK universities

Reach for success in 2014

As we start a new year here in London, we are thinking about ways in which we can change our lives.

It is traditional in the UK to make a New Year’s Resolution (Wikipedia explains this tradition here) – it is a way that British people make a choice to change the way that they live, work and behave in the future.

Popular resolutions include giving more money to charity, adopting a healthier lifestyle, making new friends or learning a new skill.  Between us, the staff at Excel English will be eating less chocolate, taking up photography, moving house and learning Danish.  And we will keep doing all we can to help our students succeed in the future.

Make Excel English your New Year’s Resolution

If you would like to change your life in 2014, why not come and study English here in London?  You can live in London with British people in homestay accommodation, make new friends from all over the world in our multinational classes, and you could even take a recognised exam while you are here in the UK, to prove your level of English to your future employer or your university.

In 2013, the teachers on our IELTS Preparation classes were justifiably proud of their students’ results.  85% of our students achieved their target result or higher, and 16% of our students reached a score of 7.0 – higher than the 6.0-6.5 required to join most UK undergraduate university programmes.

IELTS at Excel English

  • Our IELTS Preparation courses offer 4 weeks of complete preparation for your exam.
  • You will practise the techniques that will help you to succeed and achieve the best result for your level of English.
  • You will have 22.5 hours per week of tuition, with a maximum of 8 students in your class, so that your teacher can give you the support you need throughout the programme.
  • We will test you before you arrive in London, to make sure you are at the right level of English for the course.  If you need to improve your English before starting the programme, you can take an additional Super Intensive course first, and then join the next IELTS Preparation when you are ready.

Our next IELTS Preparation course begins on 27 January – find out more and apply now!
